Warm Season

When it comes to summertime activities the West Yellowstone areas is an outdoor enthusiast's paradise. The long summer days provide visitors unlimited access to explore and play in the splendor of the high country. You can fish blue ribbon streams, hike in pristine wilderness, experience real western horseback riding, go whitewater rafting or mountain bike on hundreds of miles of single track and forest service roads. In addition to the regal Yellowstone National Park right next door with its famous geysers, wildlife and waterfalls, there's adventure to be found just to the West. Hebgen Lake with its miles and miles of shoreline offers camping, boating, canoeing and some of the best fishing around. And just beyond is Earthquake Lake formed the night in 1959 that a 7.5 quake rocked the Madison Valley and a mountain fell. Still further along are the intriguing old gold mining towns of Virginia and Nevada Cities.

Maybe best of all, you can just relax and enjoy Montana 's legendary hospitality surrounded by scenery that will make you wish you had more time to spend here.

Winter Season

If you’re fortunate enough to experience Yellowstone in the winter, you’re in for a rare treat. The first word that comes to mind is magical. The snow covered landscape, frozen waterfalls and frosted trees when, contrasted with geysers and other geothermal features, create a surreal winterscape. If you’re lucky enough to venture into the backcountry, you will encounter a quiet calm that for some is a transcendental experience.

The geyser-fed rivers and streams remain unfrozen and provide refuge for hundreds of waterfowl. The areas other wild inhabitants can often be spotted with a careful eye except the ones taking a long winter’s nap. There are numerous ways to experience this winter wonderland. Outside the park there are millions of acres of public lands for snowmobilers and cross-country skiers to explore. Unique dog-sledding adventures can also be found. Nearby downhill ski areas offer world-class terrain and legendary rocky mountain powder. Inside the park there’s cross-country skiing, snowmobiling and snow coach tours.

With Yellowstone National Park directly to the east and the Gallatin National Forest on all other sides, West Yellowstone is the center of exciting winter adventures.

Visitors get downright comfortable in West Yellowstone. Lodging, snowmobile rentals and trails, snowcoach tours, cross-country ski shops and trails, guide services, dining, shopping and attractions are all available. And there’s enough trail and off-trail riding to keep the most seasoned snowmobiler satisfied.

Wildlife, tumbling waterfalls and thousands of geysers and other geothermic attractions lure visitors onto the nearly 200 miles of groomed, snow covered roads within Yellowstone National Park. Still to be explored are the hundreds of miles of snowmobile trails and the nearly 50km of groomed cross-country trails that lie just to the West of Yellowstone.
