Encompassing more than three million acres, Custer Gallatin National Forest is known for its ecologically diverse landscape stretching from the high peaks of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem to the remote pine savannas of South Dakota. The forest offers year-round recreation opportunities across breathtaking mountain terrain, scenic forests, rivers, and open wilderness areas.

The Hebgen Lake Ranger District in West Yellowstone serves as a gateway to Yellowstone National Park and the nearby Lee Metcalf Wilderness, welcoming thousands of visitors each year. Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy hiking, trail running, mountain biking, OHV riding, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, and backcountry skiing throughout the district’s expansive trail systems and recreation areas.

In partnership with the City of West Yellowstone, the West Yellowstone Chamber, and the West Yellowstone Ski Education Foundation, the district also supports more than 35 kilometers of world-class groomed cross-country ski trails winding through lodgepole pine forests and open meadows.

Custer Gallatin National Forest is divided into seven ranger districts: Hebgen Lake Ranger District in West Yellowstone, MT; Bozeman Ranger District in Bozeman, MT; Yellowstone Ranger District in Livingston, MT; Gardiner Ranger District in Gardiner, MT; Beartooth Ranger District in Red Lodge, MT; Ashland Ranger District in Ashland, MT; and Sioux Ranger District in Camp Crook, SD.
